Sleep problems are very common and affect people in different ways. There isn’t a ‘right’ amount of sleep as everyone is different, some people need a bit more and others need a bit less. The most common types of sleep problems are:

  • Problems getting off to sleep: this is the most common type. It can take some people several hours to drop off.
  • Problems staying asleep: some people get off to sleep easy enough, but find they wake through the night and have difficulty getting back off to sleep.
  • Waking too early: waking earlier than is preferred and having difficulty getting back off to sleep.
  • Poor quality sleep: Sleeping lightly with restless, disturbed and inconsistent sleep.

Sleep problems can happen for many reasons including age, medical reasons or emotional reasons. It can help to identify what sort of problem you have, so the best solution can be found. For more information about how you can improve your sleep read the factsheets below.
