Feeling Different
We can feel different from other people for a number of reasons. It could be because we have a unique identity or we have a condition that makes us act differently and understand the world around us in a different way to other people.
Autism and Asperger's
You may feel different because you have a condition like autism or asperger’s syndrome. These are conditions where there is a difference in the way the brain operates that makes it difficult to understand information or act the same way as other people. It may be difficult to understand certain words, or express thoughts about things.
The features of these conditions are quite complex but may involve:
- Having trouble understanding the meaning of certain words or what people are saying to you.
- Feeling happy one minute, then extremely frustrated or mad the next because something has been done differently and that upsets you.
- Liking a strict routine and things that stay the same.
- Have problems understanding others feelings or ‘social rules’. Difficulty using imagination.
Sexuality and Gender Identity
You may feel different because you think you have a different sexual orientation to others and you are exploring your feelings. You may be going through a period of accepting who you are and your sexuality.
It may be that you have questions about your gender, or feelings that you have been born into the wrong gender.
If these are issues that are concerning you there is help available.
