Hurting Myself
Many young people describe hurting themselves as a way of dealing with difficult feelings inside. There are different ways in which people hurt themselves such as;
- Cutting,
- Hair pulling,
- Excessive scratching
- Misusing drugs and alcohol
Some people describe the physical pain they feel as a way of relieving the pain they feel inside. It can help to find other ways of dealing with these feelings such as trying to talk to someone you trust; finding a new coping strategy such as going for a run or writing stories.
It can be really difficult to talk about self harm with other people but it is important not to suffer in silence.
Helping yourself:
Young Minds have suggested some questions you could ask yourself which may help you to begin to understand what is happening;
- What was happening in your life when you first began harming yourself?
- What seems to trigger the feeling now?
- Are you always at a certain place or with a certain person?
- Do you have thoughts or memories that are too frightening to tell someone?
- Is there anything else you can think of that makes you want to harm yourself?
Once you understand what is happening to yourself, it may make it easier to explain to other people. Even if you’re not sure of the reasons it is important to seek help. Use the links below to get started.
